A Comedy About Tragedy: A Review Of Funny People

I had very high expectations for this film. Writer/Director Judd Apatow has worked on previous projects such as Knocked Up, The 40 Year Old Virgin, and Pineapple Express...As well as producing pretty much every comedy that my generation will remember.

I find it difficult to review films like this one. I go to see films like this based on entertainment alone and kind of expect that the actors will not be winning tons of awards for their roles.

This film is what you would expect. The actual characters are comedians themselves and their stand up in the film is full of dick, ball, vagina, and other body part references. The actual comedy comes from how these characters handle everyday life. There is a scene when most of the characters are eating dinner and one of them starts talking Mandarin to his two children...Everyone sits there in silence and when they stop Seth Rogen said that he felt like he was in a scene from The Deer Hunter. Another god scene is when Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler are at the doctors office and they start making fun of his accent. The funny part is that Adam Sandler will make fun of him and Seth Rogen will laugh...It is not a fake I was told to laugh here laugh but a lot of the group laughter comes very natural in this film, which made me laugh even more.

Like most comedies there is a point in the film where everything almost stalls completely...Also this film was about 2.5 hours, and it felt like it. Like I said though, I almost expect certain comedies to stall a bit because they have to try to further the plot, I would just like someone to figure this out with keeping the jokes going as well.

I feel that they could have done more with the tragedy side of this story. It was something new and it seemed like they were scared to put a lot into that idea, when in reality it was an interesting part of the comedy.

I cannot complain...I laughed!
